Lewiston plans events marking deadly shooting anniversary
As Lewiston marks three years since the 2023 mass shooting that killed 18 people and wounded 13, survivors, families, first responders and residents continue to cope with grief and trauma. The Maine Resiliency Center supports about 150 people each month through groups and community events, while the interfaith “Can We Talk” program offers a welcoming space for people to share experiences and find connection. Those affected say being remembered matters, and community members are encouraged to ask how they are doing and make room for conversations about loved ones and what happened. Anniversary events include a candlelight vigil, a community cornhole tournament and other gatherings, while a museum exhibit preserves objects and stories from the tragedy and its aftermath. Recreation has also become a way for the community to reconnect and move forward, even as survivors and families continue to carry the loss.
