Libyan Parliament Reverses Course, Approves Türkiye Maritime Deal

Libya’s eastern-based House of Representatives unanimously approved the 2019 maritime-boundary memorandum with Türkiye, reversing its 2020 rejection of the deal and its call to sever political ties with Ankara. Supporters say the agreement could bring Libya strategic and economic leverage, strengthen cooperation with Türkiye and support offshore energy activity. Greece, Egypt and the European Union have objected, arguing that the deal infringes on other countries’ maritime rights and conflicts with international law; Greece says it disregards the maritime zones of its islands. The vote shifts eastern Libya’s position but does not resolve the agreement’s contested international legality.
