Merriam-Webster adds 'looksmaxxing' and 'Rickroll' to its dictionary

Merriam-Webster has added 1,400 words and definitions reflecting the influence of social media, artificial intelligence, technology, food, lifestyle and popular culture. New entries include “looksmaxxing,” “parasocial,” “Rickroll,” “meme coin,” “vibe coding,” “AGI,” “compute” as a noun, “cuffing season,” “yacht rock” and “Sunday scaries.” The dictionary says additions are selected through evidence of frequent, widespread and meaningful usage drawn from millions of citations, rather than simply preserving every emerging expression. Separately, Dictionary.com reported adding 5,900 words and revising more than 1,200 entries, with updates covering online slang, science, sustainability, global cuisine, health and psychology; examples include “engagement bait,” “reply guy,” “glow-up,” “goated,” “fanon” and “open world.”
