Indigenous Peoples’ Day Gatherings Draw Thousands Across Region
Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrations across South Dakota, New York, Montana, Washington and Wisconsin brought communities together for powwows, performances, crafts, food and other cultural activities. Earlier reported gatherings in Duluth, Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Rochester included indoor events, parades, a powwow and family activities. Organizers and participants emphasized passing traditions and history to younger generations, building understanding between Indigenous communities and their neighbors, and recognizing the vitality of Indigenous cultures. Speakers also highlighted teaching Indigenous history alongside U.S. history and remembering forced removal and other historical trauma. Participants said Indigenous culture and identity are celebrated throughout the year, even as states and communities observe the holiday in different ways.
