Airbnb bars hosts from requiring guests to wash dishes or strip beds
For reservations booked on or after Nov. 20, 2026, Airbnb will generally bar hosts from requiring time-consuming checkout chores such as washing and putting away dishes, stripping beds, starting laundry or taking rubbish off-site, though limited exceptions may apply for local conditions. Hosts may still request lighter tasks, including leaving dishes in the sink, gathering towels and sorting rubbish into designated indoor bins, and must disclose reasonable house rules and requests before booking. Airbnb will flag policy violations and allow hosts to appeal; the changes address travelers’ complaints about burdensome chores, while some hosts say the rules could raise costs and undermine property care. Separately, Birmingham, Michigan, commissioners unanimously voted to ban short-term rentals after complaints about disruptive parties and safety incidents; existing permits remain valid until April 15, 2027.
