Detroit Installs 70-Foot Christmas Tree
Detroit’s 70-foot, Michigan-grown Norway spruce was lifted into place at Campus Martius Park on Nov. 4, marking the start of the city’s holiday season. The tree traveled 226 miles from Mesick, where Elaine Zinger and her late husband planted it with their daughters about 50 years ago; Zinger donated it in his memory. Families and other spectators watched its arrival, accompanied by music from the Detroit School of Arts Marching Band. The free 23rd annual tree-lighting celebration is scheduled for Nov. 20, with more than a million lights, live entertainment, Olympic figure skaters, food trucks and other activities.
