Lima Council Considers Faster Nuisance Enforcement

Lima City Council is considering a proposal to speed up enforcement of recurring, visible property-maintenance violations, including overgrown grass and weeds, trash and debris, and vegetation blocking public rights-of-way. Under the draft, the city would publish an annual notice identifying covered violations, then give property owners 72 hours after receiving notice to correct a problem; if they do not, the city could hire contractors and charge the owner for the work, with costs added to property taxes. Owners would have a limited period to appeal, and officials say the change could shorten a process that currently leaves many violations unresolved for days or weeks. The proposal was discussed at a council meeting, but the articles do not report that it has been enacted.
