Mackenzie Phillips Recalls Tensions With Costar Richard Masur

Mackenzie Phillips said on Valerie Bertinelli’s podcast that Richard Masur was not kind to her while they worked together on the first season of One Day at a Time. Masur, who played divorce lawyer David Kane, left the sitcom after his character’s breakup with Ann Romano, but Phillips said the two later reconciled when he apologized and praised her talent. Bertinelli also recalled feeling intimidated by producer Norman Lear, while describing him as loving, supportive and protective toward the show’s young actresses.
