Madison Mayor Rhodes-Conway Ends Reelection Bid Amid Threats
Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway says she will not seek reelection in April, reversing a campaign she announced in July. She cited escalating threats and harassment toward herself, her family, staff and council members, along with personal-safety and mental-health concerns, increasingly vitriolic civic debate and sexism. Her decision follows criticism of the city’s response to the fatal police shooting of Corey Ruiz, including the removal of a memorial encampment that had blocked an intersection; Rhodes-Conway did not mention the episode in her announcement. She said she is proud of her administration’s work, including investments in transit, housing and infrastructure, and will continue contributing to the community in other ways.
