Magnitude 5.7 Quake Injures Up to 22, Disrupts Trains in Shizuoka, Aichi
A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck western Shizuoka Prefecture early Nov. 8, with shaking reaching upper 5 on Japan’s intensity scale in Chita, Aichi Prefecture; no tsunami was reported. News reports put the number of injured at between 15 and 22, and the quake disrupted rail service as bullet trains slowed and some local lines suspended operations. The Japan Meteorological Agency urged residents to remain alert for further strong shaking over the coming week, particularly in the next two to three days, while assessing the quake’s connection to a potential Nankai Trough megaquake as unlikely.
