Massachusetts Secures $130 Million for Springfield Rail Upgrades
Massachusetts has secured $130 million in federal funding to modernize rail infrastructure around Springfield Union Station, upgrading tracks, signals and related equipment to ease conflicts between freight and passenger trains. The work is expected to improve reliability and scheduling for existing Amtrak services, reduce delays and train idling, and create capacity for expanded passenger rail. It advances the state’s Compass Rail vision, including proposed West-East service connecting Springfield with Boston and Albany; state officials say design and planning are underway, with a goal of two daily round trips between Boston, Springfield and New Haven by 2030. The award comes through the Federal Railroad Administration’s CRISI grant program and adds to more than $280 million in federal funding secured for West-East Rail.
