Massachusetts Secures $130M for Springfield Rail Upgrades
Massachusetts has secured a $130 million federal grant to modernize rail infrastructure around Springfield Union Station, advancing the broader West-East Rail plan. The work will upgrade tracks, signals and related infrastructure to ease bottlenecks and conflicts between freight and passenger trains, improve service for Amtrak’s Vermonter and Valley Flyer, and create capacity for expanded passenger rail. State and federal officials described the award as a major step toward better regional connections and economic opportunity; the funding follows earlier federal grants for project design and engineering.
