Memphis DA releases footage of fatal Guard shooting
Prosecutors in Shelby County released body-camera, surveillance and bystander videos related to the July 5 fatal shooting of 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson by Tennessee National Guard soldiers in downtown Memphis. The footage shows Johnson firing toward people near AutoZone Park and fleeing, then officers and Guard members reaching him after the shooting; it does not capture the encounter immediately before the soldiers fired or the shooting itself. Officials say Johnson was armed and turned toward the soldiers with a gun, while an autopsy report shared by his family says he was shot in the back, raising questions about the accounts of the incident. Johnson’s family attorney said investigators must determine what happened just before the fatal shot and whether the use of force was justified. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s review is ongoing, and no criminal charges have been filed.
