Merz warns Western Balkans risks rival-power struggle
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for unity in his strained coalition, warning that political extremism and alleged Russian efforts to destabilize Germany pose serious threats. His appeal comes amid low approval ratings and tensions following election setbacks for the governing parties, as well as disputes between the CDU and its Bavarian sister party, the CSU. Separately, during a visit to Montenegro, Merz urged faster European Union integration for the Western Balkans, warning that the region must not become an arena for competition among major powers such as Russia and China. He said Germany supports bringing the six Western Balkan countries closer to EU membership, while they remain at different stages of a lengthy accession process.
