Meta Tests Community Notes in 16 Latin American Countries With Possible Shift From Pros

Meta is beginning to test its Community Notes crowdsourced fact-checking system in 16 Spanish-speaking Latin American countries, allowing approved contributors to add context to posts on Facebook, Instagram and Threads. The notes will not be publicly visible during the testing phase, while Meta’s existing third-party fact-checking program will continue. Meta said it may eventually transition away from professional fact-checkers if the system proves effective, although Brazil is not included in the initial rollout. Fact-checking organizations, including the International Fact-Checking Network, have warned that Community Notes alone may not adequately limit harmful misinformation, while supporters view the model as a way to reduce moderation errors and broaden public participation. The expansion comes amid heightened concern about disinformation and political polarization in a region that has recently held multiple elections.
