Mexican Leftist Leader Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Dies at 92
Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas, a leading figure of Mexico’s political left and a founder of the Party of the Democratic Revolution, has died at 92, President Claudia Sheinbaum and other political figures said. A three-time presidential candidate, he helped build a broad opposition movement after breaking with the long-dominant Institutional Revolutionary Party and later became Mexico City’s first popularly elected head of government. His 1988 presidential bid, widely viewed by critics as having been undermined by electoral fraud, became a pivotal moment in Mexico’s democratic transition and helped lead to the PRD’s founding in 1989. Sheinbaum praised his principles and lasting influence on Mexican public life.
