Mexico Arrests Ex-Prosecutor Over Claims of Unauthorized US Raid
Mexican authorities arrested former Chihuahua attorney general César Jáuregui Moreno on Oct. 17 after investigations into an April raid on a suspected drug laboratory. Prosecutors allege he allowed U.S. personnel to participate in the operation without authorization, potentially violating laws reserving such security actions for Mexican forces; state investigators have also cited possible unlawful exercise of public office and conspiracy. The case gained international attention after two U.S. Embassy employees, identified by media sources as CIA officers, and two Mexican officers died in a car crash after the operation. Officials have stressed that the investigation concerns how the raid was conducted, not the dismantling of the laboratory, and that allegations remain unproven. President Claudia Sheinbaum has said Mexico supports intelligence-sharing with the United States but does not permit U.S. personnel to take part directly in operations on Mexican territory.
