Mexico City emerges as reported NBA expansion alternative
The NBA is advancing expansion plans, with Las Vegas appearing closer to securing a team, but Seattle is no longer considered a sure choice for a second franchise. Commissioner Adam Silver has reportedly told team owners that bids for Seattle have not yet satisfied the league, and a Mexico City-based group’s proposal for a team and new arena district has drawn attention as an alternative. The league could wait for unsuccessful Las Vegas bidders to pursue Seattle and strengthen its offers, but it has not committed to adding two teams or to a set timeline. The uncertainty has also prompted speculation about effects on Portland’s arena negotiations, though there is no clear evidence the league is keeping Seattle in play as leverage over Portland.
