Mexico Destroys 52 Tonnes of Avocados After Weevil Detection
Mexican growers destroyed up to 52 tonnes of avocados after authorities reported avocado seed weevil larvae in fruit prepared for export, with producers in Michoacán, Jalisco, Colima and Nayarit involved. The fruit was burned and buried under pest-control procedures, and officials said the suspect avocados had not reached the market; export shipments were detained while the case was addressed. Authorities have not announced the financial losses, the volume of shipments held or when they might resume, and the reports do not establish that a broader export ban was imposed. The detection drew attention because Mexico, particularly Michoacán, is a major supplier to the U.S. market.
