Mexico holds ex-prosecutor on treason charge
Former Chihuahua Attorney General César Jáuregui faces a rare treason charge over allegations that he allowed U.S. agents to participate in an April anti-drug operation without federal authorization. The operation drew scrutiny after two Americans reported to be CIA agents and two Mexican officials died in a vehicle crash on the way back. Jáuregui’s lawyer says his client authorized an operation to arrest suspected criminals but was not told U.S. agents would take part; Jáuregui has not been convicted and is presumed innocent. A judge has ordered him held in pretrial custody, and a separate decision on whether the federal case can proceed is pending. The case has intensified tensions over Mexico’s sovereignty and rules limiting foreign agents’ operations in the country.
