Mexico-U.S. trade talks postponed over Xi visit and G20 schedule

Mexico and the United States postponed the fourth round of bilateral trade talks, which may be rescheduled for October. Luis Rosendo Gutierrez, Mexico's deputy economy minister for foreign trade, told reporters in Mexico City after the American Society of Mexico convention that the delay stems from Xi Jinping's U.S. visit and the G20 summit. He said technical work with the U.S. Trade Representative continues daily. Gutierrez said the priority is reducing Section 232 tariffs, duties set on national security grounds, on steel, aluminum and automobiles. The agenda grew from 54 issues to nearly 90. Xi arrived at Andrews Air Force Base for a three-day state visit. Donald Trump greeted Xi and Peng Liyuan with a military band, cannons and a B-1 bomber overhead ahead of a formal White House meeting Thursday. Scott Bessent said on Fox News the U.S.-China Busan truce was extended to January 10 from November 10. Contested: none found. Gutierrez said the sides will announce in coming weeks when the fourth round will take place. The exact date and any interim tariff relief remain open.
