Miami Captain Awaits Sentence in Three Girls’ Deaths
Yusiel López Insúa is due to be sentenced in Miami after pleading guilty to seaman’s manslaughter over a July 2025 collision in Biscayne Bay that killed three girls at a sailing camp. Investigators said the tugboat captain’s view was blocked by structures on the barge, no lookout was assigned, and he was using his phone near the time of the crash. Prosecutors, the defense and the victims’ families support a recommendation of one year and one day in prison followed by six months of home confinement or supervised release, though the judge will decide the sentence; the charge carries a maximum of 10 years.
