Miami Tribe Adds Richardville House to Tribal Register
The Miami Tribe of Oklahoma added the Chief Richardville House, also known as Akima Pinšiwa Awiiki, to its own historic register during an Oct. 23 commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the 1826 Treaty of Mississinewa. Built in 1827 for Miami leader Chief Jean Baptiste de Richardville, the Fort Wayne home is described as the only surviving treaty house in the United States and an important center of Myaamia political and community life. The house was already listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2012. The Allen County-Fort Wayne Historical Society has owned and maintained the property since 1991, with the Tribe previously helping fund roof repairs and contributing $2,500 toward further preservation.
