Michigan Launches First Statewide K-9 Air Transport
Michigan has launched its first emergency air-transport program for injured or critically ill police and other public-safety K-9s, providing round-the-clock flights to Michigan State University’s Veterinary Medical Center. The service is a partnership among North Flight Aero Med, Corewell Health Aero Med, Munson Healthcare and MSU, intended to speed access to specialized care, particularly for dogs injured in remote areas. Two flight nurse-paramedics can provide initial emergency treatment during transport for conditions including trauma, burns, poisoning and heat illness, while the K-9’s handler accompanies the dog. Law-enforcement dispatch centers coordinate with the flight team to activate a response, and MSU can mobilize veterinary specialists for emergency treatment.
