Michigan Voters Renew Zoo, Museum Millages

Voters approved renewals of public funding for zoos and museums in several Michigan counties. In Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, the Detroit Zoo millage passed with roughly 70% support, continuing funding for zoo operations, animal care and education at an average cost of about $10 a year for a home valued at $200,000. Voters in Wayne and Oakland counties also approved a 10-year millage for the Detroit Historical Society and Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, which will provide public support and free admission to residents. Kent County voters renewed a 10-year millage for John Ball Zoo and the Grand Rapids Public Museum, expected to raise about $15.6 million in its first year for animal and artifact care, facilities, exhibits and educational programs; officials said it will not fund a proposed aquarium.
