Charleston to phase out peninsula parking meters for app payments

Charleston plans to replace on-street parking meters on the peninsula with ParkMobile, gradually removing meters beginning on the eastern side, with most of the transition expected to be complete by the second quarter of 2027. Drivers will be able to pay by app, online or by phone, including a call-in option for people without smartphones; parking sessions will be tied to license plates, and users can receive reminders and extend sessions remotely within posted limits. Rates are expected to remain unchanged, and existing meters will continue accepting payment until they are removed. City officials say the unified system is intended to simplify parking, improve space turnover and help address tourism-related pressures while serving residents and workers.
