Minneapolis veto stands, St. Paul studies robotaxis
The Minneapolis City Council failed to override Mayor Jacob Frey’s veto of an ordinance that would require a human safety monitor in driverless rideshare vehicles, leaving the proposed rule in place only as a rejected measure. Supporters cited worker protections and safety concerns, while Frey and Waymo argued the requirement would effectively ban autonomous vehicles and could limit a transportation option valued by some people with disabilities. In neighboring St. Paul, the City Council unanimously directed its planning commission to study autonomous rideshares and recommend possible safeguards for safety, data-sharing and workers before the technology arrives on city streets.
