Minnesota Candidates Debate Fraud in Key Races
Minnesota’s pandemic-era child nutrition fraud scandal has become a major issue in the state’s 2026 election campaigns, with candidates debating oversight, accountability and its impact on public services. Republican gubernatorial candidate Lisa Demuth says she would strengthen whistleblower protections, while Democrat Amy Klobuchar has proposed auditing every state department. In a competitive state Senate race, Republican Nels Pierson blamed fraud for worsening affordability, while Democrat Simon Glaser emphasized housing, child care and health care costs. In the U.S. Senate contest, Republican Michelle Tafoya faulted Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan for serving in Gov. Tim Walz’s administration; Flanagan called fraud unacceptable and said Walz had accepted responsibility. A separate opinion article argues that Minnesota’s reported fraud should be viewed in proportion to fraud elsewhere, while stressing that the crimes remain serious and should not be excused.
