Minnesota Communities Plan Indigenous Peoples Day Events
Indigenous Peoples Day celebrations honor Native cultures, traditions and contributions through community events, art and education. In Minnesota, activities include festivals, powwows, films, a sunrise ceremony and cultural events featuring food, arts, music and dance. The University of Texas at Arlington is marking four years of its Land Acknowledgment Courtyard with a mural celebration, a Native-plant tour and hands-on art. Indigenous peoples also domesticated crops including corn, potatoes, tomatoes, chile peppers and cacao; the interconnected Three Sisters system of corn, beans and squash supported sustainable agriculture and fed major civilizations. Native American communities remain a vital part of American life, carrying forward enduring traditions.
