Minnesota-St. Thomas Set for First Meeting in 92 Years

Minnesota and St. Thomas are set to meet in men’s basketball for the first time in 92 years, bringing together two Twin Cities schools just three miles apart. The game is expected to draw roughly 10,000 fans to Williams Arena, creating an unusually lively crowd for a nonconference matchup. Minnesota coach Niko Medved said the game offers little competitive benefit because St. Thomas’s Summit League standing is unlikely to improve the Gophers’ NCAA Tournament résumé, while Tommies coach Johnnie Tauer hopes the local matchup can become a regular rivalry. Tauer also described the game as a special experience for both programs despite St. Thomas entering as the underdog.
