San Diego Moves to Evict Mission Bay Sports Center Over Unpaid Rent

San Diego has begun formal eviction proceedings against Mission Bay Sports Center, demanding $942,753.44 in rent by October 30, 2026, or that it surrender its city-owned waterfront property at Santa Clara Point. The city also alleges lease violations involving unauthorized subletting and private events, missing insurance and financial records, and a late facility-upgrade plan; a separate default letter cites roughly $4.2 million in rent, interest, water charges, audit penalties and other costs over a longer period. The sports center and subtenant Tower Paddle dispute the city’s account, saying the city knew about the retail and event uses and that the leaseholder has paid millions in rent; the center says it will fight the eviction. Whether the subleases and events were formally authorized remains contested.
