Mississippi GOP Seeks Investigation Into Colom AI Video
The Mississippi Republican Party has asked Attorney General Lynn Fitch to investigate Democratic Senate candidate Scott Colom over an AI-generated video depicting his opponent, Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, fleeing reporters. The party argues the video, posted about a month before the election with the caption “Based on a true story,” may violate a 2024 state law barring deceptive, realistic alterations of a candidate within 90 days of an election when intended to harm them. The law includes exceptions for satire and parody, and the dispute centers partly on whether the video qualifies for those protections. The party has also asked the attorney general to seek an injunction preventing Colom from using the video or similar AI content; Colom’s campaign had not responded to one outlet’s request for comment.
