Missouri to Require Permits at Unstaffed Ranges Starting in 2027
Missouri will require most users of the Missouri Department of Conservation’s more than 35 agency-owned, unstaffed firearms ranges to hold a valid small-game hunting permit starting in March 2027. The Conservation Commission approved the change amid increased range use and reports of damaged facilities and litter; the department says the permit requirement is intended to promote safety and reduce misuse. Existing age and disability exemptions will remain, and the rule will not apply to partner-operated ranges or the department’s staffed ranges. Missouri residents can qualify with an annual permit starting at $11.50, while nonresidents can buy a daily permit for $16 or an annual permit for $108. Separately, the department has temporarily closed its unstaffed range at Reifsnider State Forest near Warrenton while it assesses safety concerns linked to misuse.
