Missouri Archives Acquires 1862 Jefferson City Map

A newly acquired 1862 map of Jefferson City, drawn by Union Army lieutenant Anthony Burton and sent with a letter to his family, has revealed previously undocumented details of the capital’s history. Missouri State Archives researchers identified evidence of a citywide George Washington’s Birthday celebration and a possible second executive mansion. The documents are undergoing conservation and are expected to go on display at the Archives in December, when staff will present their findings.
