Mitsubishi recalls 67,146 Outlanders over backup camera glitch in U.S., Canada

Mitsubishi’s Outlander and Outlander PHEV remain popular for practical family use, offering a flexible mix of electric and gasoline power with multiple drive modes and all-wheel control. However, the lineup is currently at the center of a large safety recall covering about 67,146 U.S. and Canadian crossovers due to an infotainment software bug that can cause the backup camera image to fail when shifting into reverse. The issue stems from improper coding in the Alliance In-Vehicle Infotainment system, which can cause the touchscreen to freeze, reboot, or display a black screen, risking non-compliance with FMVSS No. 111. Mitsubishi says dealerships will reprogram the A-IVI unit with updated software at no cost, with the recall campaign targeting 2025–2026 Outlanders and 2026 Outlander PHEVs, and owner notifications planned for September 2026. The recall underscores ongoing concerns about Bosch-supplied or related infotainment components in multiple automakers, contributing to a broader trend of camera-related failures across the industry. In addition to the safety fixes, Mitsubishi continues to market the Outlander as a versatile plug-in hybrid option for varied urban and highway driving, including in markets like the Philippines where the model is being introduced with a high-torque, efficient hybrid setup.
