Moyale Clashes Drive Tens of Thousands Into Kenya

Renewed fighting in and around the Ethiopian border town of Moyale, amid a territorial dispute between the Oromia and Somali regional administrations, has driven tens of thousands of civilians into northern Kenya. The U.N. refugee agency cited estimates rising from 36,000 to as many as 50,000 arrivals, with registration and verification still underway; sporadic gunfire has continued and cross-border trade has been disrupted. Many of those fleeing are women and children, sheltering with host families or in temporary sites, while local communities face shortages of food and clean water. The Kenyan government, UNHCR, the International Organization for Migration and the Kenya Red Cross are providing food, shelter and medical care, but authorities warn local resources are under strain.
