Murder Charge, More Arrests Expected in Fortune Death

Mississippi authorities arrested 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff on a murder charge after the state medical examiner ruled that Tasia Fortune’s death was a homicide. Fortune, a 29-year-old Black mother of four, was found hanging from a tree behind an abandoned property in Jackson last month. Police Chief RaShall Brackney said Ratliff had an association with Fortune and that investigators expect additional arrests, but officials have not disclosed a motive or detailed the evidence leading to the arrest. Fortune’s family and friends remembered her as a devoted mother, athlete and woman of faith, while the case drew widespread attention amid concerns about racial violence. Ratliff was expected to appear in Jackson Municipal Court by Monday, and the investigation remains active.
