Caregivers share stories of aging parents during national month
National Family Caregivers Month is highlighting the essential role of family caregivers and the need for support as caregiving responsibilities evolve. A writer with spinal muscular atrophy reflects on her parents’ lifelong care and the concerns that arise as they age and can no longer provide the same level of physical assistance. In Maryland, AARP is offering free events and practical resources to help caregivers connect and recharge, while the Caregiver Action Network’s national campaign shares caregivers’ stories and promotes recognition of their contributions. Idaho officials are publicizing respite-care reimbursement, support groups and a conference focused on caregiver health. Separately, Arizona’s Area Agency on Aging is asking residents to direct eligible tax-credit donations toward gas cards for direct care workers who travel to clients’ homes.
