Nationwide Medicaid Work Rules Expected in 2027
Federal Medicaid changes set to take effect in January 2027 will require many working-age adults to document 80 hours a month of work, school, job training, or volunteering to maintain coverage, though exemptions apply to some groups. Supporters say the requirements are intended to encourage work and focus assistance on people most in need, while advocates and healthcare workers warn that people with health limitations or difficulty navigating paperwork could lose coverage. New York officials and providers are preparing for more frequent eligibility reviews, and Louisiana recipients will also face a shorter period of retroactive coverage for medical bills. Indiana’s recent enrollment losses underscore concerns about coverage “churn”: many people were removed for missing paperwork or verification deadlines, rather than confirmed ineligibility, and some later regained coverage.
