NBA Hall of Famer Bob Pettit Dies at 93

Bob Pettit, the Hall of Fame forward and LSU basketball legend, died at 93 in Metairie, Louisiana, on Sept. 23. A Baton Rouge native, he led LSU to its first NCAA Final Four appearance and two SEC championships before beginning an 11-season NBA career with the Milwaukee and St. Louis Hawks. Pettit won the NBA’s first Most Valuable Player award in 1956 and earned a second MVP in 1959; he was an All-Star every season and led the Hawks to the 1958 championship. He retired in 1965 as the league’s all-time leading scorer and was the first NBA player to surpass 20,000 career points, leaving a lasting legacy as a pioneer of the forward position.
