NC State Ex-Trainer Arrested, Faces 32 Charges

Former N.C. State sports medicine director Robert Murphy Jr. was arrested in Florida on North Carolina warrants after a Wake County grand jury indicted him on nine felony counts and 23 misdemeanor counts. Prosecutors allege he made sexual contact with male student-athletes under the pretext of providing medical treatment; Murphy denies the allegations, and the charges have not been proven in court. More than 30 former athletes have made similar allegations in a civil lawsuit, which a judge dismissed on procedural grounds, including statute-of-limitations issues; the athletes’ attorneys have appealed. Murphy led the university’s sports medicine program from 2012 until 2022, when he resigned amid an internal investigation.
