A glacier collapse on August 26 triggered a catastrophic avalanche and flash flood along the Nepal-China border, destroying homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure across Nepal’s Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river valleys and China’s Xizang region. The United Church of Christ reports that more than 1,357 people have died, nearly 5,000 remain missing and about 1.6 million people have been affected, while thousands of children have had their schooling disrupted. Relief groups are providing shelter, food, water and sanitation, health care, education, and psychosocial support, with urgent appeals for international assistance. China has deployed hundreds of military and police personnel for rescue, medical, disease-prevention and psychological-support operations, including counseling for stressed rescuers and affected residents. The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha has launched a nationwide donation drive for food, medicine and essential supplies, and Sony Group has pledged approximately 28 million yen for relief and recovery efforts.
