New Haven nonprofit plans five veteran apartments
New Haven’s National Veterans Council for Legal Redress plans to build five affordable apartments for veterans on a vacant lot at 252 Davenport Ave. in the Hill neighborhood, along with office and community space. The project is backed by about $1.86 million in federal funding and additional support from the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority, and is intended to help veterans leaving transitional housing or facing homelessness and other challenges. Rents will be income-based, and the building will be named for Conley Monk Sr., a World War II veteran and father of the nonprofit’s co-founders. The organization says the development is a first step toward creating more affordable housing for veterans in the area.
