New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Resigns After Harassment Findings
New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell resigned after Gov. Mikie Sherrill demanded his departure following an independent investigation that found sexual harassment and repeated ethics violations. The report said Caldwell made a sexually charged remark to a staff member, sought a promotion for a state employee with whom he was romantically involved without disclosing the relationship, and violated rules involving guests at ticketed events. Caldwell and his attorney dispute the findings, calling the investigation flawed and unfair; Caldwell said he resigned to avoid distracting or impeding Sherrill’s administration. Sherrill said the case reflected a culture of sweeping misconduct under the rug and pledged that her administration would not tolerate such behavior. Caldwell also left his post as secretary of state, and Sherrill named Shirley Emehelu acting secretary of state, with midterm elections approaching.
