New Mexico launches 750,000-book literacy program
New Mexico plans to provide more than 75,000 kindergarten-through-third-grade students with over 750,000 books and literacy resources during the 2026–27 school year, with districts beginning distribution in November. Four times during the year, families will receive an individualized reading plan based on student assessments and progress, along with updates and take-home activities. The literacy packs, developed by Just Right Reader, include books matched to students’ reading levels, writing activities and QR-code phonics lessons in English, Spanish and more than a dozen other languages. The initiative is part of the state’s implementation of the 2026 High-Quality Literacy Instruction Act.
