New York Arrests 16 in $500,000 Insurance Fraud Cases
New York authorities arrested 16 people in a joint State Police and Department of Financial Services investigation into more than a dozen alleged auto-insurance fraud schemes, involving nearly $500,000 in attempted claims across New York City and several upstate counties. The allegations include staged collisions and fabricated injury claims; investigators say one Bronx scheme generated more than $154,000 in medical bills, while a Rochester woman is accused of using another person’s identity to obtain coverage and file a claim. The defendants face 31 charges, including 29 felonies and two misdemeanors. Governor Kathy Hochul says fraud contributes to high premiums and has made enforcement part of a broader effort to reduce insurance costs. Recent state reforms also expand potential penalties for people who organize staged crashes, while some measures limiting damages and injury claims have drawn criticism.
