Newsom Offers $300,000 for Tips in Six Unsolved California Murders
California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced $300,000 in rewards, offering $50,000 each for information leading to arrests and convictions in six unsolved murder cases across the state. One reward covers the 2011 killings of Sikh grandfathers Gurmej Atwal and Surinder Singh, who were shot while walking in Elk Grove; investigators have considered whether they were targeted because of their appearance and perceived religion. The other rewards concern the killings of Michelle Matteucci, John Graves, Darnell Smith, Eduardo Lira and Estevan Mejia. Officials and community leaders hope the incentives will generate new leads and help families and communities find answers.
