Newsom renames California labor building for Huerta
California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that the state’s Labor and Workforce Development Agency headquarters in Sacramento will be named for labor and civil rights leader Dolores Huerta, who died at 96. Newsom said the tribute recognizes Huerta’s decades of advocacy for farmworkers and working people and is intended to keep her example of expanding opportunity and dignity in view. Huerta co-founded the organization that became the United Farm Workers with Cesar Chavez and also advocated for women’s and LGBTQ+ rights. The newly opened building houses about 2,500 state employees across several agencies.
