Environmental Groups Complain to Ombudsman Over EU Water Directive Review

Five environmental organizations, including WWF and the European Environmental Bureau, have complained to the European Ombudsman that the European Commission advanced plans to revise the EU’s Water Framework Directive without sufficient evidence or stakeholder consultation. The complaint challenges the Commission’s administrative process—not a final amendment—and comes amid its broader “omnibus” effort to simplify regulations and address industry concerns that environmental rules delay permits for critical-minerals mines. The groups argue that existing water laws are not the main obstacle to mining approvals and that weakening safeguards could threaten rivers, lakes and public health, while industry advocates say regulatory changes are needed to improve competitiveness. The Commission says its review is transparent and inclusive, and that stakeholder input remains under consideration. The Ombudsman is expected to decide within weeks whether to open an inquiry; it cannot suspend permits or rewrite the directive, but its recommendations could increase scrutiny and influence future EU lawmaking.
