Nick Shirley sues California over law critics call the ‘Stop Nick Shirley Act’

Right-wing content creator and citizen journalist Nick Shirley has sued California over Assembly Bill 2624, a law critics call the “Stop Nick Shirley Act.” The measure expands the state’s Safe at Home program to immigration-support service providers, allowing eligible workers to keep their names and addresses out of public records and restricting publication of certain identifying information after a written request. Shirley and America First Legal argue that the law is an unconstitutional, content- and viewpoint-based restriction on investigative reporting, violating the First and 14th Amendments and related due-process protections. Shirley says the legislation was enacted in response to his investigations into alleged fraud involving government-funded immigrant-run daycares, hospices and other organizations, while supporters say it is intended to protect service providers from doxxing and harassment. The lawsuit names California officials including Attorney General Rob Bonta and Secretary of State Shirley Weber and seeks to block enforcement of the law.
